FOOD SAFETY SYSTEMS FOR AUSTRALIAN DAIRY PRODUCTS
    ASSURANCES IN RELATION TO MELAMINE
    Dairy Australia is the industry-owned service company for the Australian dairy industry, whose members are dairy farmers and industry bodies. Dairy Australia works in partnership with all government agencies responsible for controlling and monitoring food safety hazards that have the potential to impact on the Australian dairy industry.
    In Australia strict systems operate to ensure that food producing animals and their products are not exposed to chemicals by administration or by indirect means at levels that may affect food safety, including dairy food safety. The Australian dairy industry has an excellent track record of producing safe, nutritious and high quality milk and dairy products. Consumer safety is of paramount importance to all participants in the food production chain.
    The current melamine incident in China has been reported as a deliberate contamination of raw milk supply in China, leading to serious health problems in Chinese infants consuming infant formula. Melamine contamination of milk has not been found in Australian sourced products.
    In Australia, robust processes and controls are applied throughout the dairy supply chain to ensure that all dairy products meet the required high standards, are unadulterated, fit for human consumption, and are free from damage or deterioration. Rigorous checks and hygienic standards are applied at every stage of the food chain; from the quality milk leaving our farms, during transportation and distribution, throughout processing and manufacturer, and right through to delivery to our customers around the world. Australian legislation requires that packaging, tags, labels and other materials used to package or identify milk and milk products must be fit for their intended food use.
    Biosecurity measures and quality control monitoring ensure that the Australian milk supply is protected from deliberate contamination. Australia has the appropriate systems and regulations in place to assure the quality, safety and integrity of Australian dairy products.
